Physician-Owned Hospitals Face Extinction, Eliminating Patient’s Right to Quality Care with Proven Outcomes. The Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital Advocates for Patient’s Right

Current Situtation
Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital (IOH) like all physician-owned hospitals, is threatened with extinction. The American Hospital Association, which represents non-profit hospitals, and opponents of physician ownership in Congress, continue to work to eliminate physician-owned hospitals.

Restricting physician-owned hospitals and their ability to provide high quality healthcare to patients and communities puts 55,000 nursing and staff jobs at risk nationally along with over 28,000 physicians, which alone would raise the current unemployment rate and significantly impact patients’ ability to receive high-quality and timely care.Unlike non-profit hospitals, physician-owned hospitals pay taxes, and have paid more than $500 million in federal, state and local taxes. Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital alone employs 300 people. Public and private studies have shown that physician hospitals have fewer complications after procedures, lower infection rates, lower patient-to-nurse ratios and deliver high quality care with 98 percent-plus patient satisfaction ratings.

Physician-owned hospitals such as IOH accept all patients who can benefit from the care provided at those facilities. Physician-owned hospitals treat Medicare and Medicaid patients, and in fact, approximately one-quarter of annual revenue comes from Medicare and Medicaid. These hospitals also meet the needs of patients who have no health insurance.
