THE INDIANA ORTHOPAEDIC HOSPITAL (IOH) HELPS PATIENTS REHAB FASTER AND TRAIN LIKE THE PROS WITH THE ALTER-G® ANTI-GRAVITY TREADMILL®
IOH Outpatient Therapy is the first facility in Indiana to purchase the anti-gravity treadmill.
IOH today announced that the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill, the world’s first and only treadmill using NASA based anti-gravity technology, has been installed to help provide patients the opportunity to experience rehab or training without pain, even while the patient is still recovering from surgery or an injury. IOH is the first facility in the state of Indiana to purchase the equipment, which is housed at the IOH Outpatient Therapy – Northwest facility, located at 6040 W. 84th Street, Indianapolis, IN.
AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmills enable faster rehabilitation, pro-like training, and weight loss and can remove major obstacles associated with training and physical rehabilitation – impact on the body and pain of recovery – and helps people achieve better results. Patients at IOH can now rehab and train like professional athletes Oguchi Onyewu and Dathan Ritzenhein.
“Top athletes are using the AlterG because they are seeing improved results in their performance, but also the increased speed in the rehab process following surgery or injury,” said Jeff Sorg, Manager of the IOH Physical Therapy department. “The AlterG is gaining a lot of notoriety across the country and we are excited to bring that same level of excitement to our facility and to the Indianapolis area.”
With the AlterG, patients can run and walk without bearing their entire weight, reducing the impact on the body to optimize rehab and training. Its Differential Air Pressure (DAP) technology applies a precise and comfortable lifting force to the body that reduces weight on the lower extremities and allows precise reduction of body weight – up to 80 percent of a person’s weight, so people can find exactly where the pain stops and natural movement feels good again.
There are many benefits of training and rehabbing on the AlterG. Athletes use the AlterG to reduce the frequency of injury, build fitness and strengthen and improve their muscle coordination. Patients use the AlterG to recover from injury and surgery and it allows many of them to immediately do partial weight bearing exercises. Patients with neurological disorders maintain, and in some cases even regain, functionality and mobility working with the AlterG. It is also used as a motivational tool for obese patients as users can immediately experience what it would feel like to weigh less, exercise with less joint impact and stress and improve their cardiovascular health.
“The AlterG will greatly enhance rehabilitation for our patients,” said Sorg. “In addition to the early weight-bearing for our post-operative patients, it will allow many of our patients an earlier and pain-free return to running and walking. Many of our patients deal with needing assistive devices for walking, and also limping. The treadmill will allow them to improve their technique to reduce the compensations that develop leading to limping, and to do so without pain.”
AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmills are designed to be used for lower body injury and surgery rehabilitation, aerobic conditioning, weight control and reduction, sport specific conditioning programs, neurologic retraining and geriatric strength and conditioning.
